| The Science of Crime Solving
Many times the public overlooks the efforts of these crime scientists. Many don't know the difference between a criminologist and a criminalist. The difference is night and day. The criminologist studies the sociology of crime. They examine criminal behavior, crime statistics, and the causes and roots of crime. The criminalist is a scientist, often someone with a doctorate in biology or chemistry (or both) who analyzes the evidence collected at a crime scene so victims can be properly identified and suspects can be found. In most cases, it is the forensic evidence that makes or breaks a case. There are rarely any witnesses at homicides other than the killer and the victim. The forensic scientist gives victims the voice they lost when their lives were taken. We will soon have further information and/or profiles of the following:
Forensic anthropologist Taylor Knight
has helped to solve some of LA's most baffling murders. She's what
some call a bone detective, using her knowledge of human anatomy to give
names to faceless victims--the skeletonized remains found in the Angeles
National Forest or the barren wastelands of the Mojave desert. There
are still victims of Charlie Manson waiting to be found in the desert.
When they are found, it's a forensic anthropologist who will tell detectives
the age, sex, race, and other characteristics of the victim. Her
efforts have helped to solve cases where only a few bits of bone were found.
Forensic Psychiatrist Jack Powell,
MD. He's worked hand-in-hand with the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit.
He's more than a profiler. His research on the homicidal impulse
has included hundreds of hours of interviews with some of America's most
vicious killers. He specializes in domestic homicide patterns among America's
men, having spent over 500 hours interviewing men who killed their wives
or girlfriends.
The analysis of insects at a crime scene associated with a corpse can tell investigators the time of death.
These are the specialists who bring us one step closer to solving these seemingly unsolvable crimes. DNA Analysis: Biologists who specialize in genetic evidence can shed new light on unsolved cases where evidence has been properly stored. Body fluids and other biological evidence is stored in giant refrigerators. This kind of evidence is stored indefinitely in murder cases since there is no statute of limitations on the prosecution of murder. Trace Evidence: Based on the theory that when two objects come in contact with each other, there is always some transfer from the one object to the other. The hard part is finding it. Ballistics
